Integrated Longitudinal Strength-Based Assessment (ILSA)

This presentation begins with a review of the evidence-based principles of intervention for integrated service delivery that can be specifically applied to developing competency-based practice in any MH and SUD program, by any person in a helping role, with any level of licensure or training, including peers and front-line staff, and then goes on to focus on the application of these principles to a welcoming, recovery-oriented integrated and strength-based assessment process (Integrated Longitudinal Strength Based Assessment – ILSA) and the associated documentation framework to support that process. The presentation illustrates how to begin the assessment with welcoming and hope, organize the “integrated” story longitudinally to see how all the issues emerge during the story, and focus the assessment on identifying current strengths/skills/stages of change as well as the strengths that were used in previous periods of relative success. The presentation also illustrates how to make diagnoses of MH and SU conditions based primarily on history, and to use past periods of stability as a guide for identifying baseline MH conditions.

Dr. Minkoff is Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Senior at ZiaPartners, Inc., a behavioral health system consultation firm in Tucson, AZ. He is Board-Certified as an addiction psychiatrist and community psychiatrist, Board Member and Products and Services Committee Chair of the American Association for Community Psychiatry, playing a leading role in the development and dissemination of the LOCUS Family of Tools, as well as the Self-assessment for Modification of Anti-Racism Tool (SMART) for which he is co-author. He was one of the original members of the federal Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee (2017-20). He is Co-Chair of the Community Psychiatry Committee of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry, and one of the lead authors of the 2021 Report: Roadmap to the Ideal Crisis System, published by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. He is a member of the National Council’s Medical Director Institute and consults to the National Council Centers of Excellence on Integrated Care and CCBHCs.

This course is self-paced and the estimated time to complete is approximately 60 minutes. In addition to viewing a 50-minute video presentation, learners must earn a score of 80% or higher on a post-assessment and complete the post evaluation to receive contact hours or CME credits for completing the course. Supplemental course materials (i.e. pdf of slides) are also provided.

At the end of the course, there is a post-test, and you will have as many attempts as needed to earn a grade of 80% or higher to receive contact hours or CME credit. The survey to evaluate the course at the conclusion is also required to receive credit.
