Addressing the Specific Needs of Women in Substance Use Disorder
The presentation will provide an overview of the unique addiction (substance use disorder) trajectories, treatment, and recovery needs women have compared to men. Sex (biological factors) and gender (social factors) interact in complex ways to create these differences and will be explored. Addressing these aspects can improve outcomes for women with addiction and this presentation will explain how.

Smita R. PrasadMD, MBA, MPH, FASAMDr. Prasad is board certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She is an Assistant Professor of Addiction Medicine with the Tulane Dept. of Psychiatry. She is the Medical Director of the Louisiana Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority Board, the President of the Louisiana Society of Addiction Medicine, and the current Chair of the Physicians Health Special Interest Group for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She is the Medical Director of the Longbranch Recovery & Wellness substance use disorder treatment programs. She provides outpatient addiction medicine services at the Tulane Addiction Medicine Clinics in New Orleans where she is also Medical Director. She is an avid volunteer and was recognized as a New Orleans CityBusiness 2024 Health Care Hero. She lives with her family in Springfield, Louisiana.
