From Awareness to Action: Management of Alcohol Use Disorder in Primary Care
This case-based presentation will address alcohol use and alcohol use disorder, covering background knowledge and epidemiology, clinical pearls, evidence-based evaluation and an interdisciplinary approach to treatment. The aims of this presentation are to increase capacity for all clinicians across the state, not just addiction specialists, in treating alcohol use disorder.
Learning objectives:
- Describe why alcohol use screening, diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in outpatient and urgent care settings is important for patient care and public health.
- Apply best practice approaches for screening and evaluating patients’ alcohol use and readiness to change.
- Apply successful evidenced based strategies to address unhealthy alcohol use and AUD.
- Learn how to utilize the FDA-approved and off-label medications indicated for AUD

Brendan Prast MD MMPHBrendan Prast is a Family and Preventive Medicine physician at MaineHealth Primary Care in Sanford, Maine, and faculty at MaineHealth Institute for Research. He is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine for Tufts University School of Medicine and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency and general preventive medicine fellowship at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. In addition, he completed a Masters of Public Health at the University of New England. His career interests include substance use disorders, international medicine, and population-based research. He serves on multiple advisory committees for groups involved in managing substance use disorders, including the Maine Medical Professionals Health Program, Lunder Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine Time to Ask Program, and the Maine Opioid Settlement Support (MOSS) Center.
