Methadone for Opioid Use Disorder for the Generalist: Everything You Wanted to Know but were Afraid to Ask
David Lawrence, MD, will provide an update on the use of methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD), including its benefits and drawbacks compared to buprenorphine. Participants will explore the regulatory landscape governing methadone, review its unique pharmacological features, and learn about settings outside of Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) where methadone may be used. The session will also cover both traditional and emerging practices for methadone initiation and re-start.

– Contrast one benefit and one drawbacks to methadone for OUD compared to buprenorphine
– Identify four layers of regulation for methadone for OUD and initiation
– Explain two unique pharmacological features of methadone
– Recognize non-OTP settings where methadone for OUD can be used in certain circumstances
– Distinguishing the regulations for methadone for pain and OUD
