PMP Series | Opioids and Beyond: Safe Strategies for Chronic Pain Treatment
Join Cara Zimmerman, MD, MBA, for this lecture exploring a holistic approach to chronic pain management, with an emphasis on evidence-based, non-opioid treatment options. Participants will learn how to assess and manage chronic pain using a comprehensive framework, build confidence in applying individualized risk–benefit analyses for chronic opioid prescriptions, and identify appropriate candidates for opioid tapering. Practical strategies for safely and gradually tapering opioids will be reviewed, along with effective non-opioid therapies to support long-term pain management.
Objectives:
- Learn about a comprehensive pain management approach and non-opioid measures for chronic pain management
- Gain comfort in an individual risk-benefit approach when it comes to a patient’s chronic opioid prescription
- Understand which patients to consider for an opioid taper and how to do so slowly and safely
- Review non-opioid treatment management for chronic pain

Cara Zimmerman MD MBACara Zimmerman, MD, MBA, is the Medical Director of Primary Care-Based Substance Use Disorder Treatment (MAT/OBAT) at Thundermist Health Center. She completed her Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine training at Brown University and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Brown University. She is a staunch advocate for harm reduction in her primary care and addiction practice and is interested in quality improvement and systems processes, nontraditional forms of care delivery such as street medicine, and behavior change. She is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the leading harm reduction organization in the state, Project Weber/RENEW. She consults as part of the Opioid Response Network to teach colleagues about substance use disorder and loves being part of a multidisciplinary team.
