Polysubstance/Complex Withdrawal Management for Nursing

A 2018 study found that in 63% of Opioid Overdoses Deaths involved another substance. Addressing polysubstance use is a part of a comprehensive response to the SUD landscape. Amelia Hersey, PA-C will explore the role of Nursing in Complex Withdrawal Management for multiple substances. Participants will understand choices around how to monitor multisubstance withdrawal and assess the risk of multisubstance withdrawal. She will also discuss high risk symptoms and outline when to escalate care.

Learning Objectives:

• Review/refresh on the basics of opioid and alcohol withdrawal management.
• Understand choices around how to monitor and assess risks of multisubstance withdrawal, including but not limited to alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepine, methamphetamine, and xylazine.
• Discuss possible medication management differences for multisubstance and complex withdrawal.
• Discuss red flags/high-risk symptoms to watch for in multisubstance withdrawal and when to escalate care.
