Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Substance Use Disorder, and Navigating Recovery
In this presentation, Susan Stoner, PhD, will consider substance use disorders (SUD) in adults with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, contrasting findings from a multisite study examining SUD in middle-aged adults with PAE or FASD with those from the Washington State Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP) for mothers with substance use during pregnancy. Ways in which PCAP supports mothers with self-reported prenatal alcohol exposure will be discussed.

Susan Stoner PhDSusan Stoner, Ph.D., is a research associate professor and the Ann Streissguth Ph.D. Endowed Professor of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders at the Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. A licensed psychologist, Dr. Stoner directs the Fetal Alcohol & Drug Unit, a research program examining the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure in middle age, and the Washington State Parent-Child Assistance Program, a statewide intensive case management program for mothers who have engaged in at-risk substance use during pregnancy.
