Project ECHO: Adolescent Medicine: How SUD Fits
January’s Topic: STI’s in Adolescents and Young Adults with Christine De Matteo, DO
Adolescents face unique challenges that providers can assist their young patients in navigating. This ECHO will examine specific health issues unique to adolescents with experts in the field. The role substance use plays in these issues will also be examined as the average age of substance initiation is 12 years old, and adolescent substance use has been found to heighten the risk for violence, risky sexual behaviors, physical and mental illnesses, diminished overall health and well-being, and potential progression to addiction. Providers are in a unique position to impact the well-being of young people through their advocacy and prevention, and this ECHO series will equip them to address the ever-changing landscape of Young Adult and Adolescent health.
Learning Objectives:
- Providers will learn about health issues that are experienced by Young Adults and Adolescents
- Providers will explore how substance use prevention and specific health issues are intertwined in the lives of Young Adults and Adolescents
- Providers will be more responsive to and engaged with topical areas that impact the lives of Young Adults and Adolescents

Christina De Matteo DOI work in a number of different areas within the MaineHealth system, including hospital medicine, infectious disease, preventive medicine and harm reduction. My job allows me to experience and contribute to the full spectrum of health care, from personal health to public health. I believe that the health of both the individual and our community requires addressing upstream causes of illness, advocating for changes that lower barriers to care, and maintaining open, honest communication between patients, providers and organizations. I enjoy educating people about health issues in ways that empower them to make their own best decisions. I have a master’s degree in public health.
