Infectious Disease
Substance use disorders (SUDs) intersect clinically with many infectious diseases, leading to significant morbidity and mortality if either condition is inadequately treated. Such infections that are increasingly related to illicit opioid and other drug use include hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), invasive bacterial and fungal infections (including Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, fungemia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections), and bone and joint infections, among others. Integrated SUD and infectious disease treatment have been shown to improve outcomes for both.
